Prof. Artibano Micali died on 26 December 2012


The well-known French mathematician Prof. Artibano Micali of Brazilian nationality died on 26 December 2012. From 20-22 of March 2012 the center CAIROS of Toulouse University organizes a special workshop to honor his mathematical legacy. Commemorative speeches will be given by: Pierre Anglès, José Bertin, Philippe Carbonne, Jacques Helmstetter, Arkadiusz Jadczyk , Philippe Revoy, Waldyr A. Rodrigues Jr., Patricia Verdeau. The memorial workshop is organized in cooperation with the Telesio-Galilei Academy of Science in Switzerland. A short French biography of Prof. Artibano Micali can be found here. The mathematics genealogy project gives a list of his 22 students. A Google Scholar search for author “A Micali” returns 82 books and scientific papers. Prof. Artibano Micali is said to have been the first to study neutral meson algebras (either alone, or in relation with nondegenerate meson algebras) [private communication by J. Helmstetter]. Obituary: Ian R. Porteous (University of Liverpool, UK)


Ian R. Porteous was a mathematician at the University of Liverpool, a known as a pioneer of Clifford Algebra, and an educator on the Merseyside. He is best known for three books on geometry and modern algebra. In Liverpool he and Peter Giblin are known for their registered charity Mathematical Education on Merseyside which promotes enthusiasm for mathematics through sponsorship of an annual competition. He served on the International Advisory Board of the triannual International Conferences on Clifford Algebras and their Applications. Continue reading

Death of Jaime Keller on Friday, 07 January 2011


Prof. Jaime Keller (UNAM, Mexico) has died last week Friday (07 January 2011) after a severe illness. Prof. Keller was the founding and chief editor of the Springer journal Advances in Applied Clifford Algebras. Continue reading

Hermann Grassmann’s 200th Birthday: 15 April 2009


Hermann Günther Grassmann (April 15, 1809, Stettin (Szczecin) – September 26, 1877, Stettin)

was a German polymath, renowned in his day as a linguist and now admired as a mathematician. He was also a physicist, neohumanist, general scholar, and publisher. His mathematical work was not recognized in his lifetime. Continue reading
